National Authority for Scientific Research

Setting eyes on the future of the country's over all development, UAE announced on Friday the establishment of its first national authority for scientific research.

Making the official announcement in Abu Dhabi, HE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan said that this move comes within the frame work of the ministry's strategic plan which was endorsed by the cabinet recently, and it underscores the role of scientific research in supporting national development.

Speaking at a press conference Sheikh Nahyan said that the establishment of the national authority for scientific research is a natural outcome of the country's fast economic growth under the prudent leadership of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It is time that we intensified our initiatives in the field of scientific research in order to absorb latest technology and scientific achievements into the country; Sheikh Nahyan said.

He also thanked Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for reiterating the need for building the future on foundations of knowledge.

Sheikh Nahyan also thanked HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces for his keenness and efforts to make UAE a place of knowledge and science and utilise them in the best interests of progress.

The minister said that the national authority will have a clear vision for scientific development and will evolve a comprehensive system for research and invention.

The authority will evolve annual plans for scientific research and development, will create competitive environment among scientists, will ensure financial support for research projects and will monitor the progress in research projects.

The authority will also forge deals with universities and research centres, will link the research projects with requirements of various institutions in the country, will create among the society an awareness about the importance of innovation and invention, will develop cadre capable of conducting scientific researches and will coordinate with the government authorities for the protection of intellectual property rights.

The authority will have an annual budget of AED 100 form next fiscal year, Sheikh Nahyan said, expressing his hope that the private sector will make additional contributions to this vital sector.

Sheikh Nahyan pointed out that annual research projects will be carried out in the fields of science, engineering, technology, medicine, health sciences, economy, management, community development, agriculture, environment and water resources.

The authority will finance research projects of strategic importance to the society. The authority will also provide necessary infrastructure and research laboratories and equipments for the research institutes, Sheikh Nahyan pointed out. (WAM)
