Construction firms flouting safety norms

Major-General Mohammed Salim bin Kardous Al Ameri, Director of Civil Defence, Ministry of Interior, has told Khaleej Times that the civil defence inspectors have come across several violations of rules for workers’ safety by a number of construction companies.

Absence of foremen and engineers to oversee stages of construction from the beginning to the end and failure to adopt necessary safety measures to ensure smooth execution of work, mainly in multi-storey buildings, were striking examples of non-compliance with the safety rules, he said recently.

Al Ameri noted that workers in high-rise buildings under construction were not wearing helmets and other safety gears.

“Most of the equipment and machinery are out of date and their life expectancy has expired several years back,” he said, adding that even the good machinery and tools did not undergo routine maintenance.

He warned that these practices posed a direct danger to the lives of workers.

“The ministry would not tolerate these and Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, has instructed us to coordinate with the Ministry of Labour to conduct regular inspection campaigns to ensure safety and security of workers,” Al Ameri said.

He said the companies which did not comply with the safety rules would be referred to the police pending trial on charges of putting the lives of workers under danger.

“We have found several companies committing these offences and leaving workers to do hazardous jobs without taking precautionary measures. Sometimes, there are no foremen at the work site to step in or call for assistance when there is any danger,” he added. ‘ Source
